Ionic Bonding

Positive ion --> usually Metal atoms
atom that loses electron, so they're putting the positive sign to ask for electron
Negative ion --> usually Non-metals
atom that gains electron, so they're putting the negative sign as a sign for releasing the electron

The charge depend on the amount of the electron lose or gain by the atom.

Ionic bonding happen between metal and non-metal in order to complete each other and have the noble gas configuration, which are either 2, or 8, depending on the energy level.

The picture above shows the process of ionic bonding. As Na is metal atom and Cl is a non-metal atom, the electron in outer shell of Na move to Cl. This happen also because Cl is nearer to the noble gas state when it gain another one electron. In the other side, Na is nearer to the noble gas state when it lose one electron. It's just like rounding off numbers in mathematics, to the nearer ones..
The complete end product should be looked like the picture below, with the bracket and charge

Diagram of bonding in sodium chloride. A sodium ion (2,8)+ gives an electron to a chloride ion (2,8,8)-. Both ions have full highest energy levels.
